The 3 Minute Thesis (3MT) competition and joint seminar is the first activity under the MOU between National Taiwan University (NTU) and Texas A&M University (TAMU). The college-wide 3MT competition aims to forge CPH students’ skills in scientific presentation and communication, and the TAMU joint seminar aims to intrigue CPH students and scholars in advanced scientific fields. All CPH graduate and undergraduate students were encouraged to attend this event.

Seven graduate or undergraduate students were selected and enrolled in the final competition. Their inspiring topics are listed as follows:

Yi-Hsuan Lo, Institute of Epidemiology and Preventive Medicine

“Middle-aged and older Chinese immigrants' acceptance of robots versus pet as a companionship for their later adulthood: Results from New Zealand”

Chun-Sheng Huang, Institute of Environmental and Occupational Health Sciences “Silent gift in atmosphere”

Krystal Tsai, Institute of Environmental and Occupational Health Sciences

“How Effectively Your Kitchen Hood Works?”

Huang Han-Sheng, Institute of Environmental and Occupational Health Sciences “Every coin has two sides: The Street Sweeper & Its Bag Filter”

You-Xuan Fang, Institute of Environmental and Occupational Health Sciences “Uncharted Chemicals Lurking in the Waters”

Rowan Quirk, MSc/PhD in Global Health Program

“Making Health Intervention for Multiples”

Nan Su Huang, Department of Public Health

“Not Only for COVID-19 Diagnosis: Using RT-PCR to detect JE Virus in mosquitos from pig farms”

We are thrilled to have four scholars from NTU (Profs. Jhucin Rita Jhang, Ling-Wei Chen, and Hsiao-Yu Yang) and TAMU (Prof. Ivan Rusyn) judge this event, where the awardees are listed as follows:

1st place, Rowan Quirk (Photo 1)

2nd place, Krystal Tsai (Photo 2)

3rd place, You-Xuan Fang (Photo 3)

After the 3MT competition, the awardees from the TAMU Toxicology symposium, Noor Aly and Lucie Ford, shared their outstanding work with the audience at NTU. Noor shared her research about how to apply advanced analytical methods to characterize environmental pollutants. Lucie illustrated the utility of in vitro cell-based model for characterizing inter-individual variability in responses to complex mixtures.

With the participation of all the presenters, audience, referees, and the logistic team from Prof. Yu-Syuan Luo’s lab, we proudly present the 3MT competition and joint seminar this year. We sincerely hope that this event can foster further collaboration between TAMU and NTU in the future (Photos 4&5).
